***CORRECTED*** Man Convicted of Stealing Books From Multiple Local Libraries
On May 31, 2013, a Clackamas County Jury convicted Billy Joe Davis II (DOB: 10/31/70) of Milwaukie with two counts of Theft 1 and two counts of Theft 2 for stealing approximately 50 books from the Lake Oswego Public Library and multiple other libraries in the Portland metropolitan area.
This conviction was the culmination of multi-jurisdictional investigation and court process that started in April of 2012, when the Lake Oswego Police received information that Mr. Davis had checked out 50 books from the Clackamas County Library system, valued at approximately $3,750, and had failed to return them. The investigation revealed that Mr. Davis had also taken books from libraries in Tigard, Beaverton, West Linn, Clackamas and Multnomah County. Mr. Davis was apparently selling the books to local book stores and online. A number of the books have been recovered and returned to circulation at the respective libraries.
Lake Oswego Police Detectives worked with Tigard and Beaverton police to help close their cases, and were able to clear the cases in West Linn and Clackamas as well. Mr. Davis also recently plead guilty in Multnomah County for Theft 1 for the case that was uncovered during this investigation. He is scheduled to be sentenced next month in Clackamas County.
